Summer perfumes: what to look for when it’s hot

Why your winter perfume feels heavy in July, which notes hold up in the heat, and how to make your scent last longer on the island.

Summer perfumes: what to look for when it’s hot

Which perfumes are good for summer?

Light, fresh ones: citrus, green and aquatic notes, light jasmine, white musk, coconut. Heat makes a perfume stronger on your skin, so whatever you wear in January feels twice as loud in July.

What to look for

  • Citrus (bergamot, lemon, mandarin) — cool from the very first second, but they fade fast.
  • Aquatic and green notes — a “clean” effect that holds up in the sun.
  • Coconut, almond, white musk — the summer sweetness that never feels heavy, the “just back from the beach” smell.
  • Light florals — jasmine, orange blossom, tiare.

What to avoid in July

Heavy oriental scents, dense vanilla, smoky woods and leather. They are not “wrong” perfumes — the heat just makes them shout.

How to make it last in the heat

Summer perfumes fade faster, precisely because light notes are the first to evaporate. Three things help:

  • Body cream or body oil in the same scent before you spray.
  • Extra essence, +1 € per ml — the same perfume, at a higher concentration.
  • A 15ml bottle in your bag for a top-up in the afternoon. It costs 6 €.

On the island

Don’t leave the bottle in your beach bag all day: heat and sun spoil it.
